10 Steps To Optimizing Your Blog Posts To Help Them Rank on the Search Engines

optimizing blog postsOptimizing your blog posts so that they rank on the search engines is a crucial component when it comes to blogging. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen people waste their  time creating valuable content that nobody ever reads because their content isn’t ranking in the search engines.

Here’s a video that explains the components of optimizing your blog posts.

Once you understand these components and get used to implementing them each time you create a blog post, they will become second nature and will literally not take you ANY extra time to implement.

And once you start ‘posting on purpose’ (optimizing your blog posts) instead of randomly throwing content out onto the internet and hoping someone will see it, you will start to generate WAY more traffic to your blog posts, and therefore way more leads, sales, etc.

Step 1- Do Your Keyword Research- This is a Crucial Step To Optimizing Your Blog Posts

Keyword research is a key component to optimizing  your blog posts and getting them to rank in the search engines. In other words, it makes no difference if you’re ranked in the number 1 spot on Google for a keyword that’s not getting very many monthly searches.

Keyword reasearch is a whole separate lesson, and you can find a ton of training about it if you go to Google and do a search… I am not going to train on it in this post (the purpose of this post is to show you “how to optimize your post”).

I will say that I have a tool called Keyword Winner that I personally use and recommend for helping you do your keyword research. You can learn more about Keyword Winner here.

Step 2- Create a Title for Your Blog Post That Contains Your Keyword

Having your keyword or keywords (if you’re using a long-tail keyword) in the title of your post is an important factor when it comes to ranking your post on the search engines.

In your settings, under Permalink Settings, you want to select ‘Custom Structure’ and paste this code in:

/%postname%/

(This is explained further in the video). This will help you automatically have your keywords that are in your title to show up in the URL as well… which is great for optimization.

Step 3- Write a Post Containing At least 400 Words

In order to get your blog post to rank in the search ebgines, it needs to have enough substance to it. Ideally, your post will be at least 400 words (400-600 is ideal, but it’s okay if it’s a bit longer).

Step 4- Sprinkle Your Keywords Throughout Your Blog Post

In order to optimize your blog post and have it rank on the search engines, you’ll want to make sure your keywords are sprinkled throughout your post. A good rule of thumb is to have your keyowrd(s) be about 1-2% of your total content… usually about once per paragraph.

Step 5- Keep Your Paragraphs Short- Approximately 1-3 Sentences

Having a lot of white space on your blog posts is also important. Once you get your readers to your site by ranking your blog post on the search engines, you want to make it easy for them to read your valuable content and not overwhelm them by having really long paragraphs.

Ideally, your paragraphs will be about 1-3 sentences long.

Step 6- Insert Your Keywords In The First Sentence and the Last Sentence

In order to optimize your blog post so that it will rank on the search engines, you’ll want to make sure that the first sentence and the last sentence of your post contains your keyword(s). No need to know why this is… it’s just the way it is when it comes to search engine optimization!

Step 7- Add At Least 1 Image To Your Blog Post (and Create an Alt Tag For The Image)

Adding images to your posts not only appeals to your reader’s eye and makes your post look nice, but it’s also great for search engine optimization. Once you add the image, you can easily add the Alt Tag (this is explained in the video above).

People are also, for whatever reason, apt to click on images… so it’s good to create a link for your image as well that takes the reader who clicks on it to your capture page or website of your choice. (This is also further explained in the video).

Step 8- Add an Internal Link To Another One of Your Blog Posts

When optimizing your posts for the search engines, it’s good to add an internal link within your post that will take your reader to another page (or post) on your site.

This is not only good for search engine optimization for your particular post, but each time you do this, it creates a backlink to another one of your posts (which will also help that post rank).

Step 9- Add H1, H2, and H3 Tags To Your Blog Post

Once your post is written, you now need to go back and add H1, H2, and H3 tags to some of your keywords. This is a simple process which will help your blog post rank in the search engines and it will also break it up nicely and make it more pleasing to the eye. (The process of adding these tags is explained in the video).

Step 10- Use Bold, Italics, and Underline on Some of Your Keywords

Finally, you can go back through your post that’s already been written and add bold, italics, and underline to some of your keywords. This is extremely simple to do and will help your blog post rank in the search engines.

That’s it… those are the 10 steps to optimizing your blog posts to help them rank on the search engines.

And, as I mentioned earlier, once you get the hang of these 10 steps, it will become second nature and your will start to do them without even thinking about it. This will help you to ‘post on purpose’ and get your blog posts to rank in the search engines every time… therefore generating way more traffic for you.

I hope this has been helpful. Please leave me your comments and questions about the 10 steps to optimizing your blog posts to help them rank on the search engines below.
