It’s Okay to Have High Standards (And There’s Nothing Romantic About Going Dutch)

I just returned from a date and am on a rampage.

Dating, for me, provides lots of really good lessons about standards and about the importance of never lowering the bar.

I feel it’s important to have high standards in all areas of your life… otherwise you’ll just end up settling for less than what you really want and/or deserve. Tonight was a good reminder about the importance of having high standards.

I went on a first date tonight. That’s usually the only kind of date I ever go on because one date is usually enough for me to realize that if I was to go on another one, I would be lowering the bar in some way. And personally, I refuse to lower the bar at this point in my life (when it comes to dating or any other area of my life).

Here’s the deal. I’m a 43-year-old single mother of 2 small children (ages 6 and 3). It’s going on 4 years since their father and I split up… and I haven’t moved into another relationship yet because I absolutely refuse to settle when it comes to myself and my kids. I’m certainly not interested in being in a relationship just for the sake of being in one… and I only want to demonstrate the very best for my kids which means I refuse to lower the bar in any way and always maintain high standards.

There are certain things when it comes to dating that are absolute deal breakers, and the list gets more and more defined as time moves on. Tonight I realized another thing to add to the dealbreaker list (as I talked about in this video).

Having high standards is important in all areas of life… and it’s particularly important when it comes to having a business and being an entrepreneur.

Over the last 9 years that I’ve been in the network marketing industry, my standards have changed quite a bit.

When I first started out, I was willing to work with anyone that was vertical and breathing that had a credit card and was ready to get started. Over the years I’ve gotten much more particular about who I’m willing to work with and I’ve continuously raised my standards.

As a single mother, my time is very limited (and extremely valuable to me). My goal is to help as many people as possible be successful beyond their wildest dreams.

However, over the years I started to get really tired of wasting my time with people who were curious about being successful and building a home-based business, but weren’t serious about it.

So my standards have gradually changed, and I’ve continued to raise the bar… in my business and all areas of my life.

These days,  if you want to join me in my business, you have to have a strong ‘Why’ and prove that you’re committed to succeeding because I refuse to waste my time with people that are ‘trying it out’.

I’ve also raised my standards when it comes to the type of companies that I’m willing to do business with. I have solid criteria (and very high standards) when it comes to this (you can learn more about that here).

And, of course when it comes to who I want to spend my life with and bring into our lives as a role model for my kids, my standards are extremely high.

You may think I’m picky or that my expectations are too high or whatever… but really what it comes down to is that I refuse to settle in any way, shape, or form at this point in my life.

And when it comes to doing business, I’m looking for the people who are also not willing to settle and that are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed (not the ones that do 2 hours of work per day for 2 weeks and quit because they haven’t gotten the results they’re looking for yet).

Okay, so that’s my rant for tonight… and of course I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on all of this…

As we drove through those gates I realized that one of my dreams was coming true… and that the next day I would hold in my hand the first copy of a book that I wrote… I would officially be a published author.

3 Criteria for Building a Successful Network Marketing Business

As you’re probably aware by now, I’m in a big transition period in my network marketing business.

I have been doing a huge amount of research and due diligence as I move into the next phase of my career…

This has all been very interesting, educational and exciting and I wanted to share with you some of my thoughts and things that I’ve learned (about the industry and about myself) along the way… and some of the criteria that I find crucial in order to build a successful network marketing business.

I’ve been in the network marketing industry for over 9 years, and I’ve built a successful business and full-time residual income. However, in the beginning of 2012 I decided that I wanted to step things up a couple of notches and create a network marketing business and a system that will easily allow me to help others achieve the same (or better) results that I have.

First of all, I took a long hard look at my business and thought to myself,

“What’s NOT working about my network marketing business?”

I realized that what it all comes down to is that people will never succeed in a network marketing business where they aren’t doing activities on a daily basis that they LOVE to do.

So, by training people to make a list of their friends and family, cold call leads, initiate the 3-foot-rule, hand out samples at gas stations and coffee shops,etc, I’d be doing (most) people a disservice, because most people do not like to do these things and will not continue to do them long enough to build a successful network marketing business.

I know that what I love to do (my true passion) is to leverage the internet to build a network marketing business and to teach others how to do the same (those that this is of interest to, that is).

So, my next question to myself was,

“What do I need to have in order to be able to build a business this way, and to easily help others to do the same? What does the network marketing business I’m in need to have in place in order for me (and my team) to be successful?”

I made a list of criteria that I need in order to build a successful network marketing  business. This consisted of things such as:

• awesome  capture pages
• and effective email autoresponder sequence
• a powerful direct response sales/opportunity presentation
• and the list goes on…

Once I had my VERY specific criteria in place, it made it easy for me to see the things that met these standards, and to rule out anything that didn’t meet my specific criteria for building a successful network marketing business.

I also have some things in place that absolutely WON’T work for me when it comes to building a network marketing business.

You see, I am EXTREMELY passionate about the network marketing industry and what it provides, but here are some things I am NOT passionate about:

1) Asking people to do things that they don’t want to do (or that I’m not willing to do myself) in order to build a network marketing business.

For example. if I’m not willing to drive around town with a bunch of samples in my car and hand them out to everyone I come in contact with, how can I possibly expect my team to do it? My goal is to teach people how to build a successful network marketing business doing things that they are passionate about and primarily, by leveraging the power of the internet.

Criteria #1: Being able to help people build a network marketing business doing something they love to do each day.

2) Doing something (building a network marketing business) just for the money

There’s a lot of flash out there when it comes to choosing a network marketing business these days. And there are definitely a lot of ‘good’ companies that can offer a decent comp plan for the people that want to build a business. But what I’ve been finding upon doing my due diligence, is that when it comes right down to it, the products in many of these companies lack integrity… and personally I cannot put my name behind something that falls into this category.

Here are a couple of examples…

Some network marketing companies have very ‘sexy’ products promoting things that are very ‘hot’ in the marketplace right now (weight loss, etc), but the products involved with some of these programs are not anything that I would personally want to put into my body (even if it might help me lose weight). After being in the wellness industry for as long as I have, I am very conscious about certain ingredients, etc. and if I’m not personally willing to put these products into my body,  I certainly can’t expect anyone else to. I personally don’t care how much money I can make doing it, I know that if I’m offering something that I don’t personally believe in, I won’t be able to sleep at night knowing that there’s something less than beneficial that I’m offering to people.

Another example that I recently came across were some other very ‘sexy’ network marketing companies that look great once again for the people who want to make money by building a network marketing business, but if someone was to buy the products simply from a consumer standpoint, they’d be paying way more for the same exact product that they can easily find elsewhere. In this case, once again, I would not be able to sleep at night if I was selling something to people that was overpriced and has no real value to them unless they recommend it to others in order to make money themselves. This, once again, makes it all about the money, and I can’t personally stand behind something like this.

Criteria #2: Products with integrity

3) Building a network marketing business with a high attrition rate

This is a big pitfall that I’ve seen and have personally come up against during my 9 years in the network marekting industry. I’ve watched people (myself included) put a ton of time and energy into recruiting people into their network marketing businesses only to have them fall away the following month. What happens in this situation is that people feel like they’re treading water, or spinning their wheels… because, no matter how hard they work or how many people they recruit in a given month, enough people fall away in the same month that their overall volume pretty much remains the same.

This is one of the most frustrating things about attempting to build a residual income, in my opinion. And, quite frankly, residual income is the real reason I’m in this industry. I’m all about having a ‘walk-away’ income that will continue to come in whether I work or not. Building a network marketing business in a company with a high attrition rate makes it very difficult to achieve true walk-away income.

So, that being said, another criteria in order for me to get behind a network marketing company, is that it has products that produce RESULTS. Noticable results that make people want to continue to order the products every month FOREVER.

Criteria #3: Results-driven products for long-term residual income

Are You Supporting the Network Marketing Industry as a Whole? Or Do You Have a Scarcity Mindset?

Are you a supporter of other companies in the Network Marketing Industry? Or do you have a scarcity mindset when it comes to supporting people in other Network Marketing companies?

The Network Marketing Industry is amazing… and I firmly believe that if we all stick together and support each other, we’re all better off in the long run.

Many people have a scarcity mindset when it comes to supporting companies other than their own in the network marketing industry. I don’t understand it…

Don’t you want to support your fellow network marketers? And wouldn’t it be nice to have some customers in your downline who are building a business with another company in the network marketing industry?

It’s always unbelievable to me when I see people who are trying to keep their blinders on, as well as put the blinders on their downlines, and act like theirs is the only network marketing company on the planet (and actually hope that the members of their downline don’t realize that there are others).

I would actually prefer that my downline takes the time to do their due diligence, so that when they commit to building a business with me and my network marketing company, they know that they are in the right place, based on all of the other options out there.

I am also a believer in supporting as many other people in the network marketing industry as I possibly can. I am a part of several communities withing the industry as a whole (outside of my specific company), such as MLSP and the Empower Network. I feel very grateful to be continuously surrounded by amazing high conscious people from all different network marketing companies, as I know for a fact that we have a ton to offer each other.

Not only can we provide value to each other in the way of comradery, personal development, encouragement, mindset, events, etc.. but we can also provide immense value to each other in the form of products.

Let’s face it, some of the best products on the planet are produced by network marketing companies… so don’t you think we should all support each other, the cause, and the network marketing industry by using some of the other amazing products out there that are manufactured by network marketing companies other than our own? I do…

Another important part of the equation here is mindset. If you have the blinders on and are trying to protect your downline from learning about other amazing copmanies in the network marketing industry, you’re coming from a scarcity mindset.

Having a scarcity mindset in any sense of the word is detrimental to your ability to succeed in the network marketing industry or any other area of your life.

The best way to be successful in the network marketing industry (or anything for that matter) is to focus on the abundance that’s available to all of us and how fortunate we are to be in such an amazing industry that gives us the ability to tap into that abundance on a daily basis. 

 Entering into a scarcity mindset will not serve you, and it will deter your chances of success.

And, haven’t you ever noticed that coming from a scarcity mindset just flat out feels bad? I personally prefer to focus on having an abundance mindset any day of the week…

In a couple of weeks, I’m hosting an event at my house to support a friend in another network marketing company (I’ll be inviting MY friends to come here about HER products). I’m happy and excited to do it because

1. It gives me the opportunity to help someone in another company reach her goals for the month… I get to make a difference (which is my main goal on a daily basis).
2. It gives me the opportunity to learn something about another company in my industry and how they do business (education is always a good thing, in my opinion)
3. It’s  a great excuse to have a bunch of friends over for a fun evening…

It’s a win-win in my opinion…

Not to mention, the woman who I’m hosting the party for is a customer of mine… she buys products from my network marketing company every month. And I’m not a customer of hers yet… so I need to learn about her product line so I can become a customer!

A Shared Vision for the Empower Network

I’m writing this post today because I am just STOKED.

I joined the Empower Network when it launched back in October – well, I actually joined a couple of days BEFORE it launched - and it has been an exciting journey ever since.

As with any new company, there have been hurdles and challenges that David Wood and David Sharpe (the founders of the Empower Network) have had to overcome… but never for a minute have we lost hope, or momentum.

As a matter of fact, it just keeps getting more and more exciting.

For example,  in the last 30 days, our traffic grew by more than 300% – from around 250,000 pageviews on January 1st, to averaging over 800,000 pageviews by January 29th, with a peak of around 906,590 pages loaded in one day.

This is just to give you an example of the kind of authority the Empower Network is gaining on a daily basis.

What this means is that, for those of us that are using this viral blogging platform, it makes it MUCH easier to rank in the search engines so that our content can be seen. And this basically equates to:

more exposure

=more leads

=more sales

=more $

Our Vision for the Empower Network

Let’s start with the vision of the Empower Network founders, David Wood and David Sharpe.

David Wood and David Sharpe’s vision for the Empower Network right from the get-go was to eliminate the learning curve for newbie internet marketers and create a structure (including 100% commissions that are paid IMMEDIATELY into the affiliates’ bank accounts) to allow people to start generating significant income online. They wanted to make this possible for people who are brand new to the internet world, and get rid of the old model where it took having to achieve guru status in order to generate significant income online.

They’ve already accomplished this… even on a larger scale than they had anticipated, and it’s growing by the day.

These guys are literally unstoppable. There have been a number of ‘growing pains’ that they’ve come up against along the way (for example: several different merchant account providers who haven’t been able to handle the level and velocity of growth that has happened within the Empower Network, servers that weren’t able to handle the level and velocity of growth that has happened within the Empower Network, etc).

However, no obstacles have been able to get in the way of the growth of the company because the vision for the Empower Network is solid.

My Vision for the Empower Network

I have my own vision for the Empower Network…

I have to say that from the very beginning when the Empower Network launched, and through all of the hurdles that we’ve had to overcome, I have never doubted for even a split second that we are in the right place at the right time.

It’s been so exciting for me, after 6 years of internet marketing, to be able to offer something to people that has the ability to make a significant difference in their lives IMMEDIATELY… TODAY.

I have also gained an enormous amount of knowledge by listening to the training provided in the Empower Network Inner Circle and Costa Rica Mastermind Retreat… training that has already taken my game to the next level.

This is so exciting because I know that I can use this platform to significantly leverage myself and my business by pointing new members of my team to these trainings where they, too, can start to generate immediate results and eliminate the learning curve.

That being said, my vision for the Empower Network is that in a year from now there will be an enormous community of people who are earning a full-time residual income online and LOVING every minute of it. People who were once struggling to make any money on the internet will be succeeding…. people who have lost their traditional jobs will be succeeding… people who were already succeeding will be succeeding on a whole new level.

Much of this is already happening, but when I think about my vision for the Empower Network, I see it on a much larger scale. And I love that I get to be a part of such an amazing community of highly conscious people who are up to big things in the world.

Don’t Be a People Pleaser (Unless You Want to Stay Broke)…

I had to write about the people pleaser topic today, since it’s been showing up all around me…

This topic today was originally inspired by my friend David Sharpe who I was listening to on my iPod at the gym this morning (on one of the AWESOME Empower Network Inner Circle audios). David was talking about how being a people pleaser will cause you to be broke, not only financially but emotionally as well…

Immediately upon leaving the gym I stumbled upon this quote:

“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is to try to please everyone.” – Bill Cosby

I love this… and totally agree.

So I decided that this must be the official thought for the day and, since it’s one of my favorite topics, I thought I’d share some thoughts about it.

Why Being A People Pleaser Will Keep You Broke

I see it around me all the time and it not only makes me cringe, but it saddens me as well… people pleasers who go through their life day by day thinking that they can please everybody and trying not to offend anybody or turn anybody off.

As a matter of fact, in some ways I used to be a people pleaser myself.  When I say this, I am referring to the way I was behaving with my marketing.

At the core, I am a full-blown Jersey Girl (I live in Colorado now but was born and raised in New Jersey). My Jersey Girl personality is NOT a people pleaser in any way, shape or form. I have never been one to take any sh@* from people, and I’ve never had an issue telling it like it is or standing up for what I believe in. I guess you could go so far as to say I have a bit of an attitude (this is a pretty typical quality for a Jersy Girl).

That being said, when I first entered the marketing world, I thought I needed to tone it down and just ‘be nice’. I thought it would be best to just try to  please everybody and appeal to everybody.

I even avoided creating videos for the longest time because I didn’t want my attitude (and my Jersey accent) to shine through… it was way easier for me to tone it down in text (video was much too REAL).

I was a marketing people pleaser. And all I have to say is: It didn’t work. At all.

As I started to step into my true personality in my marketing (thanks to some coaching that I got and just the process of evolution), I started to develop a following. People liked me for me… not for trying to be something I’m not.

Yes, I’m sure I’ve turned a ton of people away in the process, but the ones that have been attracted to me have stuck like glue and they follow me wherever I go.

What I’ve learned is that this is much more beneficial (to everyone involved) than being a people pleaser and trying to please everyone.

Key Points About Being a People Pleaser

1) Being able to please everybody and appeal to everyone in your marketing is literally impossible.

Think about it… there is absolutely no way you can please everybody all the time. People are all different… they all have different likes and dislikes and are all drawn to different things.

2) When you try to appeal to everyone you will end up attracting nobody.

If you try to steer your marketing so that you can attract the masses, what will happen is it will not be targeted enough to attract the people who are your target audience.

3) Being authentic is a truly honorable quality. Being a people pleaser is not.

The key is to always be authentic. Don’t be afraid to tell it like it is… to be straight about how you feel. Yes, there will be some people who may not agree with you, but the more you stand for what you truly believe in, the more you will attract people who REALLY resonate with you.

By giving up the need to be a people pleaser, you will

• free yourself up from worrying about what others think about you and what you’re doing (when you free yourself up from this, you will find yourself having a whole lot more energy in your life… not to mention you will be much happier).
• develop some loyal followers who will stick to you like glue (this is WAY more powerful than having more followers but having ones that are not super loyal).

When you give up your need to be a people pleaser, you will simply be FREE. Free to truly be yourself…

When you are truly authentic you will become like a magnet that will have people drawn to you from all over… people who are on the same page as you, and people who respect you for not being afraid to show your true colors.

So, go ahead and take an honest look at yourself… are you a people pleaser? How about in your marketing? Are you trying to appeal to everyone?

It’s okay if you are, but now that you know that that way will never be very effective, you can go ahead and make some changes. Just be authentic and stop being a people pleaser. ..

Exciting Changes on the Horizon… A Quick Update to Keep You in the Loop

I’ve been getting a ton of emails, Facebook messages, and even texts over the past few weeks from people who are wondering where I am and what’s happening with me these days.

Facebook Timeline Will Be Mandatory… Have You Switched Over Yet?

The Facebook Timeline has been up and running for months, but many people have still not switched over and started using it.

If that’s you, I have some news for you…

Facebook just announced that over the next several weeks it will become mandatory for all of it’s users (over 800 million) to start using the Facebook Timeline.

What is the Facebook Timeline?

About a month ago, I did a post with a video that goes over some of the details of the Facebook timeline. You can access that post here.

Here are just a few of the features of the Facebook Timeline:

• New cover design. This allows you to get creative and feature the photo of your choice, your blog header, and announcement or whatever you like. It’s a great way to help feature your business (more tips about that in the recording of my webinar).
• Allows you to go back in time and add stories and pictures to fill in the blanks
• Can easily access status posts based on any date in the past (on your own timeline or on your friends’)
• Add life events with a couple of clicks
• Feature certain stories to help them stand out
• Edit or hide posts before they’re seen by others
• 7-day grace period before the public will see your timeline so be sure and hide anything you don’t want displayed on your timeline before the grace period ends. You can also choose to publish immediately

I Love the Facebook Timeline!

I’m absolutely loving the Facebook Timeline. I’ve been using it since it first rolled out for developers (before it was launched to the general public) and it’s been awesome in so many ways.

One of my favorite features of the new Facebook Timeline is the new cover design. This allows you to customize the cover of your profile to help yourself stand out, to promote your business, to highlight a current promotion you are doing at the time (book launch, etc), or whatever you like.

I change the cover on my Facebook Timeline regularly to keep it fun and up to date. Here’s what mine looks like right now:

Also, notice how the top line under your profile picture can now be a live link to your fanpage or business. This is another HUGE benefit of the Facebook Timeline.
